In 1379 (Tenju 5, Koryaku 1), a coup d'état was committed in which Hosokawa Yoriyuki, the shogunal deputy of the Muromachi shogunate, was exiled. Yoriyuki led the shogunate government for over ten years, aiding the young shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, but many of the feudal lords, including Shiba Yoshimasa, grew increasingly hostile towards Yoriyuki, and in 1378 (Tenju 4, Eiwa 4), an attempt to pursue the Southern Court forces of Kii and Izumi under command of Yoriyuki's adopted son, Yorimoto, failed. Yoshimitsu appointed the anti-Hosokawa brothers Yamana Yoshimichi and Ujikiyo as the guardians of Kii and Izumi to defeat the Southern forces, and then in February 1379 he ordered Shiba Yoshimasa and Toki Yoriyasu, also anti-Hosokawa, to put down the Yamato Rebellion.
