1590‐1626 French poet. Born in Clairac in southwestern France to a minor Protestant noble family, he studied at the universities of Bordeaux, Saumur, and Leiden. After a wandering life writing plays for traveling theatres, he gained the protection of several nobles and gradually gained fame in Paris from around 1619. He wielded great influence as a brilliant poet and a leader of free thinkers, but in 1623 he was imprisoned by religious forces led by the Jesuits. After a lengthy trial, he was finally released in 1625, but died in Paris the following year of frailty. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
