American Express Co.
The world's largest American travel agency. It is also a leading player in the fields of insurance, international finance, and investment services. Its abbreviation is AMEX. Its headquarters are in New York. It was established in New York in 1850. As the company name suggests, it initially provided express services (forwarding) for businessmen. It promoted internationalization and business expansion early on, and opened branches in Yokohama and Kobe during the Taisho era. It also continued to expand, starting money orders (postal money orders) in 1882, issuing the world's first traveler's checks in 1891, and issuing domestic credit cards (charge cards) in 1958.
