American Samoa - American Samoa

The Samoa Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa), which lies west of 171 degrees west longitude. They are also called Eastern Samoa. The capital, Pago Pago, is on the main island, Tutuila, and the seven islands are Aunuu, Tau, Ofu, Olosega, Rose, and Swains. The three islands of Tau, Ofu, and Olosega are called Manua. The total area is 197 square kilometers, and the population is 57,291 (as of 2000). The majority of the inhabitants are mixed race, known as American Samoans, with other Asians such as Filipinos, Koreans, and Chinese, as well as Americans, New Zealanders, and Australians. They cultivate cacao and bananas, fish for tuna, and also do forestry and dairy farming. In 1872 it became a supply base for the US Navy, but a territorial dispute arose with Britain, Germany, and others, and in 1889 it was made a joint protectorate at the Berlin Conference, and in 1899 Western Samoa (now Samoa) became a German territory and Eastern Samoa became an American territory.
