…Blessed with poetic talent himself, his sonnet collection Astrophel and Stella (1580-84, published in 1591), which sings of Astrophel's (meaning "lover of stars") unrequited love for a woman named Stella (meaning "star"), sparked a huge boom in Petrarchan love sonnets in England. His prose work Arcadia (1590), a love story about two princes who are cast away to the pastoral land of Arcadia, is an important work of Renaissance pastoral literature. Furthermore, his A Defence of Poetry (1595), which responded to the Puritan attacks on literature in general, discussed the utility and essence of poetry and became the starting point of English critical literature. …
