Born: 7 April 1726, Shrewsbury
[Died] April 12, 1814. London. British organist and musicologist. Studied under T. Arne from 1744 to 1746, and received his doctorate in music from Oxford University in 1769. Traveled to France and Italy in 1770, and to the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria in 1772 to gather materials for writing a history of music, and published The Present State of Music in France and Italy (1771) and The Present State of Music in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Provinces (1773). He also published A General History of Music, a four-volume work, between 1776 and 1789. From 1783 he worked as an organist at Chelsea Hospital.

[Died] January 6, 1840, London. British female writer. Daughter of C. Burney. Her anonymously published domestic novel "Evelina" (1778) was highly praised by S. Johnson. Her other works include "Cecilia" (82) and "Camilla" (96). She became a lady-in-waiting at the royal court and married the exiled French soldier D'Albret. From a young age, she was in contact with Johnson and E. Burke, and her diary and collection of letters published after her death provide an interesting glimpse into the lives of these writers.
