A port city on the west shore of Lake Tanganyika in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly known as Albertville. A shipping port for copper mined in Shaba Province. A railway runs between the city and Kabaro, about 250 km to the west, and a lake steamer connects the city to Kigoma on the opposite shore, making it an important gateway to the Indian Ocean.
