Pallava Dynasty - Pallavacho (English spelling)

An ancient Indian dynasty. It rose to power in the late 3rd century and established its capital in Kanchi (Kanchipuram), south of Chennai (Madras), and ruled the southeastern coast of the Indian peninsula and its surrounding areas. After repeatedly rising and falling as it fought with the Pandya dynasty in the south and the Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties in the north, it was destroyed (at the end of the 9th century) by the Chola dynasty, which rose to power as a local government within its territory. During this period, the kingdom was at its height under Narasimhavarman I in the mid-7th century, when it advanced into the Deccan in the north and sent expeditionary forces to Sri Lanka in the south. Under this dynasty, the culture of southern India improved in general, but the improvement in art was particularly remarkable. The techniques and styles of stone temple architecture and stone carving developed during this period had a major influence on the art of southern India and Southeast Asia in later generations.
