A sun god in Egyptian mythology. The name Aton means the sun disk. Amenhotep IV (→Akhenaten) of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt was the world's oldest religious reformer, who abandoned the traditional belief in Amon and recognized only the Aton religion as the official religion. The king himself renamed Amenophis (meaning "Amon is satisfied") to Akhenaten (the glory of Aton), abandoned Thebes, and built a new capital in Middle Egypt at Ikhutaton (the horizon of Aton), now Tell el-Amarna, and also founded the Nubian city of Highem-Aton. However, this belief in Aton declined soon after the king's death. Aton was said to give the splendor of Egypt, the creation and growth of all things, the alternation of the seasons, and the authority of kings, but he was always depicted only as a huge red sun disk.
