Nonell, I. (English spelling) NonellI

… 19th century European art shifted from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism, and its influence reached Spain as well, but the notable painters of this period were only F. de Madrazo, Eduardo Rosales (1836-73), M. Fortuny, and J. Sorolla, all of whom were active in the second half of the 19th century. However, from the end of the century to the beginning of the 20th century, the Madrid School was active with I. Zuloaga and J. G. Solana, who followed in the footsteps of Goya, and the Barcelona School, which advocated Modernism and paid attention to the new trends in Paris, with Ramón Casas (1866-1932) and Isidro Nonell (1873-1911), among others. Picasso was born in Malaga, a port city in southern Spain, 53 years after Goya's death. It was in Barcelona at the end of the 19th century that he rejected the 19th century Academic painting that he had studied as a boy, and pioneered his "Blue Period."
