Also called an automatic flash control strobe, this strobe automatically adjusts the flash duration to control the amount of light, thereby obtaining the correct exposure (strictly speaking, it would be more correct to call it an electronic flash or speed light). Auto strobes can be broadly divided into external light and TTL types. External light types have a light receiving section on the strobe body that measures the strobe light reflected from the subject and surroundings, and stops firing when the correct exposure is reached. TTL auto strobes, as the name suggests, measure the light that passes through the lens with the light receiving section on the camera, and stop firing the strobe the moment the correct exposure is reached. In other words, since it works on the same principle as a TTL exposure meter, it is more accurate than external light types. However, a strobe dedicated to the camera must be used. On the other hand, external light types are more versatile because they can be used with any camera. Some TTL auto strobes also have an advanced system that reflects data received by the strobe light receiving section as well as data from the light meter light receiving section in the light control, and also uses lens distance information to control the light, making them unaffected by the brightness or reflectivity of the background.

自動調光ストロボとも言って、ストロボ側で閃光時間を自動的に調整して光量をコントロールし、それによって適正露出を得られるストロボ（厳密にはエレクトロニックフラッシュまたはスピードライトと呼ぶ方が正しい）。　オートストロボには大きく分けて、外光式とTTL式がある。外光式はストロボ本体に受光部があり、被写体や周囲で反射したストロボ光を測定し、適正露出になったら発光を停止させる仕組み。　TTL式オートストロボは、名前のとおりレンズを通った光をカメラ側の受光部で測り、適正露出になった瞬間にストロボ発光をストップさせる。つまりTTL露出計と同じような原理だから、外光式よりも精度が高い。ただし、カメラ専用のストロボを使わなくてはならない。いっぽう外光式ならどのカメラにも使えるため汎用性が高い。また、TTL式オートストロボには、ストロボ受光部で受けたデータのほかに露出計の受光部からのデータも光量制御に反映したり、レンズの距離情報なども制御に使って、背景の明るさや反射率に影響されない高度なシステムをそなえたタイプもある。
