An insect of the Diptera family, Scorpionidae. It was introduced to Japan around 1950 after World War II with luggage from the US military, and began to increase in number, hence the name. It is 15-18 mm long. It has a long and slender body with white or brown markings on its abdomen. Its antennae are not long but ribbon-like, and the third segment is flat and large. The larvae are similar to those of the black soldier fly, with a flat dorsoventrally, many spines on the body, and a blunt tail tip. In Japan, it is distributed from various parts of Honshu south of the Kanto region to the Nansei Islands and the Ogasawara Islands. It is widely distributed in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Oceania, so it is presumed that it was also brought to Japan from these areas.
