Marsh deer

Japanese: アメリカヌマジカ（英語表記）marsh deer

The largest cloven-hoofed mammal of the deer family in South America. It lives in the marshes of Peru, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. It stands 1.1-1.2m at the shoulder, is 1.8-2m long, and weighs 100-150kg. It has a slightly rounded back, long limbs, and large horns with 4-5 cusps, the first branch of which grows far above the base. Its fur is long and tangled; yellow-red in summer and reddish-brown in winter, with white around the throat and eyes, black on the lower halves of the limbs and underside of the tail, and a black spot on the upper lip.

南アメリカ最大の偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。ペルー，ボリビア，ブラジル南部，パラグアイからウルグアイ，アルゼンチン北部までの湿原にすむ。肩高1.1～1.2m，体長1.8～2m，体重100～150kg。背がややまるく，四肢が長く，角は大きく4～5尖（せん），二またの第1枝は基部のはるか上方から出る。体毛は長くもつれ，夏毛は黄赤色，冬毛は赤褐色，のどと目のまわりは白色，四肢の下半部と尾の下面は黒色，上唇に1黒斑がある。
