The largest cloven-hoofed mammal of the deer family in South America. It lives in the marshes of Peru, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. It stands 1.1-1.2m at the shoulder, is 1.8-2m long, and weighs 100-150kg. It has a slightly rounded back, long limbs, and large horns with 4-5 cusps, the first branch of which grows far above the base. Its fur is long and tangled; yellow-red in summer and reddish-brown in winter, with white around the throat and eyes, black on the lower halves of the limbs and underside of the tail, and a black spot on the upper lip.
