...In the 7th century BCE, Sparta became a musical center, Terpandros established the nomoi (melody forms) of the kithara, and Thalētas trained boys in music. In the 6th century BCE, Sakadas won the Pythian festival at Delphi by playing the battle between Apollo and the dragon on the aulos, and some say this is the beginning of program music. Lyric poetry also became popular around this time, and this included solo songs such as those of Sappho, Alcaeus, and Anacreon, as well as choral songs such as those of Pindar and Simonides. ...
