Kasanokanamura - Kasanokanamura

Japanese:
Kasanokanamura - Kasanokanamura
Years of birth and death unknown. A poet of the Nara period. He appears to have been a minor official, and his career is also unknown. Known only from the Manyoshu, his poems from the first year of Reiki to the fifth year of Tenpyo (715-733) are known. He has 11 long poems and 34 short poems (including works listed as appearing in the Kasa Ason Kanamura Poetry Collection), half of which are poems he wrote when accompanying Emperor Gensho and Emperor Shomu on their imperial journeys. When compared to works by Kurumamochi Sennen and Yamabe no Akahito, who were also active mainly at the imperial court, his works are ranked first, suggesting that he may have been more important than either of them. His elegy for Prince Shiki (Shiki) written in the first year of Reiki (some say in the second year) is dramatically structured through dialogue, showing a unique style, but his poems for accompanying Emperors on imperial journeys are generally flat and lacking in originality. However, his songs for the imperial journey reflect the hedonistic attitude and tastes of the general public at court, and he can be regarded as one of the earliest poets to embody the elegance of the court in the Man'yoshu.
