A prestigious university in Tartu, Republic of Estonia. Founded in 1632 by Swedish King Gustav II, it was called Universitas Dorpatensis. 24 years later, it was forced to move to Tallinn due to war, but returned to Tartu in 1990. Its activities ceased in 1710 due to the Northern War. It was reopened in 1802, and in the 1800s it gained an international reputation for medicine and natural sciences, becoming the center of higher education in the Baltic region.
