A confederation formed in 1861 by seven southern states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas) that declared their secession from the Union after Lincoln was elected president. After the outbreak of the Civil War, four more states (Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee) joined, and the capital was established in Richmond. Because they advocated the protection of slavery, they were unable to obtain the expected support from Britain, and after four years of fighting, they collapsed with the defeat in 1865 and were reinstated into the Union. → Abolitionist movement → Related topics Davis | New Orleans | Richmond Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
