Idas (English spelling)
Hero of Greek mythology. Son of Aphareus, close to his brother Lynceus, they participated in the expedition of the Argo and the Calydonian boar hunt. He won the chariot race against King Evenus, the son of Ares, and married his daughter Marpessa. A battle ensued when Apollo, who had been in love with her for a long time, tried to steal her away, but Zeus mediated and allowed Marpessa to choose her own husband, and she chose Idas, a human like herself. In the end, he had a falling out with his cousins, the Dioscuri (Castor and Polydeuces), and fought to the death in a duel. He first killed Castor, then killed Lynceus, then struck Polydeuces down with a stone, but it is said that he was either struck by Zeus' lightning or killed by Polydeuces.
