Nippon Maru

Japanese:
Nippon Maru
(1) In 1592, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered Kuki Yoshitaka to build a large Ataka ship in Ominato, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture) as a royal ship when he dispatched troops to Korea. It was the largest Ataka ship at the time, with a bottom board length of about 25 meters, shoulder width of 9.4 meters, and depth of 3 meters. It had a luxuriously decorated house, as befits a royal ship. One theory is that Hideyoshi was so impressed by the excellent workmanship of the Miyatoku Maru, built by Mori Terumoto in 1593, that he renamed it Nippon Maru, but this theory is not reliable because the ship's dimensions are exaggerated. (2) A four-masted barque-type sailing ship built in 1930 as a sailing training ship. Along with its sister ship, the Kaiwo Maru, it is one of the world's largest sailing ships. Both ships were replaced in 1984 and 1989, respectively.
