Catholic (General) Epistles

The term refers to the seven letters in the New Testament other than those of Paul: the Epistle of James, the First and Second Epistles of Peter, the First, Second and Third Epistles of John, and the Epistle of Jude. The Epistle to the Hebrews may also be added, but is generally excluded. The term "general" refers to the fact that these letters were written for the whole church, not for a specific individual or church. Eusebius of Caesarea's Ecclesiastical History (4th century) attests that the term "general epistles" was a general term, but its meaning and origin are unclear.

新約聖書中パウロの手紙以外の『ヤコブの手紙』『ペテロの第1，第2の手紙』『ヨハネの第1，第2，第3の手紙』『ユダの手紙』の7つの手紙をいう。これに『ヘブル人への手紙』を加えることもあるが，一般には除外されている。公同というのは，これらの手紙が特定個人や教会にあててでなく，教会全体のために書かれた内容をもっているからである。カエサレアのエウセビオスの『教会史』 (4世紀) は公同書簡が一般的名称であったことを証明するが，その意義や由来については明らかでない。
