A large lake in southeastern Africa, it was known as Lake Nyasa for a long time, but the old name was revived with the birth of the Republic of Malawi in 1964. It is a sunken lake in the Great African Rift Valley, stretching 570 km from north to south and about 60 km wide, with an area of 30,000 km2 (10th largest in the world), an elevation of 472 m above sea level, and a maximum depth of 706 m (4th largest in the world). It is drained by the Shire River (Zambezi River system) at the southern end. The water temperature is 21°C at depth and 23-27°C at the surface. It is surrounded by the three countries of Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, but 80% of the lake surface is Malawi's territory and the remaining 20% is Mozambique's territory.
