Lake Malawi (English spelling)
A large lake in southeastern Africa, it was known as Lake Nyasa for a long time, but the old name was revived with the birth of the Republic of Malawi in 1964. It is a sunken lake in the Great African Rift Valley, stretching 570 km from north to south and about 60 km wide, with an area of ​​30,000 km2 (10th largest in the world), an elevation of 472 m above sea level, and a maximum depth of 706 m (4th largest in the world). It is drained by the Shire River (Zambezi River system) at the southern end. The water temperature is 21°C at depth and 23-27°C at the surface. It is surrounded by the three countries of Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, but 80% of the lake surface is Malawi's territory and the remaining 20% ​​is Mozambique's territory.
