A leader of the Shangqing sect of Taoism during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang in China. His pen name was Ziwei and his pen name was Baiyunzi. He became a Taoist priest at the age of 21, and studied under Pan Shizheng of Mount Song in Zhongyue, where he was taught all the secret teachings of the Shangqing sect of Taoism. He then settled on Mount Tiantai, but was invited to the imperial court several times from the reign of Empress Wu Zetian to the reign of Emperor Xuanzong, and in his later years, at Emperor Xuanzong's request, he moved to Wangwushan and created the definitive edition of the Tao Te Ching (Tao Te Ching). One of his most notable works is Zaforon (Longing on Zaforon), a treatise on Taoist self-cultivation that incorporates Zen ideas. [Mugiya Kunio]

中国，唐玄宗朝の上清派道教の指導者。字は子微，号は白雲子。21歳で道士となり，中岳嵩山の潘師正に師事して上清派道教の秘法をすべて伝授された。その後天台山に居を定めたが，則天武后朝から玄宗朝にかけて何度か宮廷に招かれ，晩年は玄宗の求めで王屋山に居を移し，《老子道徳経》の定本を作っている。代表的著作に禅の思想を取り入れた道教修養論の〈坐忘論〉がある。【麦谷邦夫】
