Dutch landscape painter. Born in Dordrecht, he studied under his father, a portrait painter. He started out in the style of Van Goyen, but gradually focused on depicting the characteristics of sunlight at different times of day, and established his own style of painting, particularly landscapes of pastures and valleys at dusk, bathed in a "golden light" reminiscent of Claude Lorrain. As a 17th-century Dutch painter, he painted a wide range of subjects, including many seascapes and portraits, but after he gained wealth and social status through his marriage in 1658, he seems to have painted less.

オランダの風景画家。ドルトレヒトに生まれ，肖像画家であった父に学ぶ。ファン･ホイエン風の様式から出発するが，徐々にさまざまな時刻における陽光の特質の描出に関心を集中し，とりわけクロード･ロランにも通ずるような“黄金の光”に満たされた夕刻の牧場や渓谷の風景に独自の画風を確立した。17世紀オランダ画家としては画題は広く，他に海景や肖像の作品も多いが，1658年の結婚によって財産と社会的地位を得てからのち，絵はあまり描かなかったらしい。
