Dirk Brouwer

American astronomer. Born in the Netherlands. He studied under De Sittel at Leiden University, receiving his doctorate in 1927, and then went to the United States on a one-year scholarship. In 1928, he visited Yale University, where he became a lecturer at the recommendation of the observatory's director, F. Schlesinger, and in 1941 he succeeded Schlesinger as a professor. Brauer's achievements cover a wide range of fields in celestial mechanics, including the motion of the outer planets, the motion of nearby moons, asteroid families and gaps, the rotation of the Earth, the motion of artificial satellites, the application of large computers to celestial mechanics, and the system of astronomical constants.

アメリカの天文学者。オランダの生れ。ライデン大学でデ･シッテルの指導を受け1927年学位を得る。次いで1年の奨学金を得てアメリカに渡った。28年にイェール大学を訪れたのを機に同天文台長F.シュレジンジャーの勧めで講師となり，41年には教授となってシュレジンジャーの後を継いだ。ブラウアーの業績は天体力学の広い分野にわたり，外惑星の運動，近接衛星の運動，小惑星の族と空隙，地球の自転運動，人工衛星の運動，大型計算機の天体力学への応用，天文定数系などがあげられる。
