In China, this refers to the study of classifying the contents of books and creating a book catalog. The name originated in the Qing dynasty. Classification and evaluation of past academic studies and ideological trends can be seen in the "Not the Twelve Children" chapter of Xunzi, the "Explanatory Learning" chapter of Han Feizi, and the "World" chapter of Zhuangzi during the Warring States period, but the first catalogs of classical books were Liu Xiang's Bie Lu and Liu Jin's Qilue in the late Western Han period. After the "Yuwenzhi" chapter of the "Book of Han" took over the use of this, it became common to include the "Yuwenzhi" or "Jingjizhi" chapters in official histories. Since the "Jingjizhi" chapter of the "Book of Sui," the four-category system of Jing (Five Classics or broadly, Classical Texts), Shi (historical texts), Zi (books of the various pupils), and Ji (collection of poems and prose) has become the standard.

中国で，書物の内容を分類して書籍目録をつくる学問のことをいう。この名称は清朝に始る。過去の学問や思想傾向を分類し，評価することは，戦国時代の『荀子』「非十二子」編，『韓非子』「顕学」編，『荘子』「天下」編などにもみえるが，古典籍の目録としては前漢末の劉向の『別録』および劉きんの『七略』が初めである。『漢書』「芸文志」がこれを襲用してからは，正史のなかに芸文志または経籍志を入れるのが通例となった。『隋書』「経籍志」以来，経 (五経または広く経書) ，史 (歴史書) ，子 (諸子の書) ，集 (詩文集) の4分類法が標準となった。
