Japanese: コウチュウ(鉤虫) - コウチュウ（英語表記）hookworm

A general term for nematodes belonging to the Ancylostomidae family of hookworms. A parasitic worm with teeth or dental plates in its mouth. Although written with the same kanji, it is different from the hookworm of clawed animals, and refers to the duodenal worm. The most important species that parasitize humans are the Zygosporum fasciatus and the American bighorn worm. In Japan, infections with both species were once prevalent, but now only sporadically found in rural areas. The American bighorn worm is mainly transmitted through the skin, and grows to a certain extent as it passes through the lungs, reaching the small intestine to become an adult.

双腺綱鉤虫科Ancylostomidaeに属する線形動物の総称。口に歯牙もしくは歯板を有する寄生虫。同じ漢字で表すが，有爪（ゆうそう）動物のカギムシ(鉤虫)とは別物で，ジュウニシチョウチュウ(十二指腸虫)のことをいう。ヒトに寄生する種類では，ズビニコウチュウとアメリカコウチュウが重要で，日本でもかつて両種による感染の流行があったが，現在では農山村部に散発的に感染者が発見される程度となっている。アメリカコウチュウは主として経皮的に感染し，肺を通過する間に一定の発育を遂げ，小腸に達して成虫となる。
