Koshoji Temple

Japanese: 興正寺 - こうしょうじ

This is the head temple of the Shinshu Koshoji school in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is a branch of Shinbutsu, a disciple of Shinran, and was renamed Bukkoji for a time, but in 1481 the 14th abbot Keigo (Renkyo) came under the umbrella of Honganji Rennyo and reverted to its former name. In 1532 it was burned down by Nichiren sect followers and moved from Yamashina to Ishiyama in Osaka, and in 1591 it moved to its current location next to Honganji to the south. In 1569 it became a wakimonzeki (main gate) and occupied a position succeeding Honganji, but since the Edo period it has sought independence from Honganji and became independent in 1876.

京都市下京区にある真宗興正寺派の本山。親鸞(しんらん)の門弟真仏(しんぶつ)の一派で，一時期仏光(ぶっこう)寺と改称していたが，1481年14世経豪（蓮教）が本願寺蓮如(れんにょ)傘下に入り旧号に復帰。1532年法華宗徒に焼かれて山科から大坂石山に移り，1591年本願寺南隣の現在地に移った。1569年脇門跡となって本願寺に継ぐ地位を占めたが，江戸期以来本願寺からの独立を計り1876年独立。
