This is the head temple of the Shinshu Koshoji school in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is a branch of Shinbutsu, a disciple of Shinran, and was renamed Bukkoji for a time, but in 1481 the 14th abbot Keigo (Renkyo) came under the umbrella of Honganji Rennyo and reverted to its former name. In 1532 it was burned down by Nichiren sect followers and moved from Yamashina to Ishiyama in Osaka, and in 1591 it moved to its current location next to Honganji to the south. In 1569 it became a wakimonzeki (main gate) and occupied a position succeeding Honganji, but since the Edo period it has sought independence from Honganji and became independent in 1876. → Related article Bukkoji Temple Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
