Japanese: ミズナギドリ(水凪鳥) - ミズナギドリ

A general term for birds in the Procellariidae family, petrel order. Length 28-91cm. Most species are either grey or brown all over, or black on the back and white underside. The Procellariidae family is the most diverse and diversified group in the petrel order. They have diversified to take advantage of the relatively less variable marine environment compared to the terrestrial environment in a variety of ways. In other words, body size, detailed beak shape, feeding methods, and breeding and migration seasons and patterns vary slightly from species to species.

ミズナギドリ目ミズナギドリ科Procellariidaeの鳥の総称。全長28～91cm。羽色は大部分の種が全身灰色か褐色，または背面が黒く腹が白い。ミズナギドリ科はミズナギドリ目のなかで種類数がもっとも多く，多岐に分化したグループである。陸上環境と比較して相対的に変化に乏しい海洋環境をさまざまな様式で利用するように分化した。すなわち体の大きさやくちばしのこまかな形態，餌のとり方，繁殖や渡りの時季と様式が種によって少しずつ異なる。
