Kujo Yoshitsune

Japanese:
Kujo Yoshitsune

A politician in the early Kamakura period. Born as the second son of Kanezane. His mother was the daughter of Fujiwara Sueyuki. He was called Gokyogoku Sessho and Nakamikadodono, and as a poet he was known as Shikibu Shisho, Akishino Gessei, Nankai Gyofu, and Saito Inshi. He entered politics early, but even when his father, Kanpaku Kanezane, fell from grace in 1196 (Kenkyu 7), he was the only member of the Kujo family to remain at court, and he rose through the ranks of the Konoe family regents to become regent and grand minister. His daughter became the empress of Emperor Juntoku. That is Higashi Ichijo-in. However, Yoshitsune died suddenly before his father on March 7, 1230. Yoshitsune was well-known as a poet, and was recognized by Emperor Gotoba as a member of the Wakadokoro (Poetry Office), and he also wrote the preface to the Shin Kokin Wakashu (New Ancient and Modern Japanese Poetry Collection). He is third in the number of poems that have been selected for the collection, after Saigyo and Jien. The "600 Poetry Contest" that he held at his own residence is known as an unprecedented event in the history of waka poetry. The collection is called Akishino Gekkiseishu and contains approximately 1,600 poems.
