A members-only audience organization for viewing good theater at a low price. It is aimed at Tokyo residents and general theater lovers in the surrounding area. It was established in April 1946 within the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education as the Tokyo Citizens' Theater Drama School, and is the oldest audience organization of its kind. It was free with a subsidy from the city, but in June of the following year it was reorganized as an independent, financially-sponsored cultural association with a membership fee system, and its steering committee consisted of experts in various fields of theater. In 1980 it became independent from the city as a foundation. Kabuki, Bunraku, new theater, opera, music, movies, and more are regularly viewed, and members can also view performances of their choice or upon application.
