Year of death: Bunka 9.5.16 (1812.6.24) Year of birth: 1742 A haiku poet of the mid-to-late Edo period. His first name was Shiro. Alternative names were Biwaen and Shujuso. He was from Moriyama, Owari (Aichi Prefecture). He was adopted into the Inoue family, a local doctor in Shinmachi, Nagoya, and became the third generation to succeed them. He was commonly known as Masaharu, and his medical name was Senan. He studied haiku under Kato Kyodai, Japanese classics under Motoori Norinaga, painting under Katsuno Hanko, and Heikekyoku under Ogino Kengyo, and was also known as the best doctor in the castle town. In haiku, a popular song goes, "Owari Nagoya is held by Shiro (the castle)," and he was highly esteemed as one of the three great doctors of the Kansei period, along with Natsume Shigemi and Suzuki Michihiko.
