Akaeshiki pottery

Japanese: 赤絵式陶器 - あかえしきとうき

A painting method used on ancient Greek pottery. It is said to have been started by the Athenian "Andokides Painter" around 530-520 BC, following the black-figure style. In contrast to the black-figure style, the image is painted in red on a black background. Contours and details could be drawn with a brush, allowing for more realistic depictions. After the new depictions of the human body by Euphronios and Euthymides, it reached its peak in the first half of the 5th century BC. Representative artists include Duris, the "Brygos Painter," and the "Berlin Painter." With the rise of fresco mural painting from the mid-5th century BC, it fell into that style. →Black-figure pottery

古代ギリシアの土器に用いられた絵付の方法。黒絵式に続いて，前530年―前520年ころアテナイの〈アンドキデスの画家〉が始めたとされる。黒絵式とは反対に，黒の背景に画像を赤く描き出す。輪郭や細部を筆で線描することができ，より写実的な描写が可能となった。エウフロニオス，エウテュミデスの新しい人体描写を経て，前５世紀前半完成期をむかえる。代表的作家として，ドゥリス，〈ブリュゴスの画家〉，〈ベルリンの画家〉等。前５世紀半ばからフレスコ壁画の隆盛につれて，その亜流と堕した。→黒絵式陶器
