When Buddhism was first established in India, it had a public meeting area in the residence of the monks' group centered around the Buddha, and was called a saṃghārāma (monk's garden, congregational garden) or āraṇya (place of serenity). Later, a stūpa, which represents the Buddha's tomb, was placed in the center, with monks' quarters surrounding it. …
