The Self-Defense Forces are primarily responsible for air defense. They are units and organizations that are supervised by the Air Staff Office and the Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff and the Chief of Staff of the Air Self-Defense Force. They engage in air attacks from foreign enemies in airspace as far away from the national territory as possible to prevent damage to the national territory and its people, and in the event of a large-scale disaster, they also carry out aerial reconnaissance, transport personnel and supplies, and international peace cooperation activities such as international emergency relief activities. They were established in July 1954 when the Defense Agency was established. In January 2007, the Defense Agency was elevated to the Ministry of Defense and came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense. They are organized around the Air Defense Command, which is made up of the Northern, Central, and Western Air Defense Forces and the Southwestern Composite Air Brigade, as well as the Aviation Training Command, Aviation Support Command, Aviation Development and Test Command, and Supply Headquarters.

主として防空を担当する自衛隊。航空幕僚監部ならびに統合幕僚長および航空幕僚長の監督を受ける部隊および機関。空からの外敵の侵入に対して，できるかぎり国土から離れた空域で迎え撃ち，国土と国民の被害を防ぐほか，大規模災害に際しては航空機による偵察，人員・物資の輸送を，さらには国際緊急援助活動などの国際平和協力業務を行なう。 1954年7月防衛庁設置に伴い発足。 2007年1月防衛庁の防衛省昇格により防衛省所管となる。防空の実戦部隊である北部，中部，西部の三つの航空方面隊と南西航空混成団で構成される航空総隊を中心に，航空教育集団，航空支援集団，航空開発実験集団，補給本部などで編成されている。
