Born: April 3, 1860 in Haarlem [Died] June 16, 1932. Bussum Dutch poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and physician. He began writing poetry and comedies while he was a student, and later participated in the founding of the literary magazine De Nieuwe Gids (New Guide) (1885). His early poetry showed a romantic tendency, but he soon changed to a symbolist style. His prose works include the symbolist novel De kleine Johannes (85), which is considered a masterpiece of Dutch literature, and many other distinctive works. He also wrote the well-received play De broeders (94). At one time he started a "communal farm" in sympathy with Tolstoy's ideas, but it ultimately failed, and he converted to Catholicism in his later years.
