Peridotite (Peridotite)

Japanese: カンラン岩(橄欖岩) - かんらんがん（英語表記）peridotite

A magnesium-rich ultramafic plutonic rock composed mainly of olivine. In addition to olivine, pyroxene is generally present, and depending on the formation conditions, spinel, garnet, plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, and other accessory minerals may be present. Rocks containing more than 90% olivine and little pyroxene are called dunite, and those containing less than 90% olivine are called harzburgite if they contain a lot of orthopyroxene, wehrlite if they contain a lot of clinopyroxene, and lherzolite if they contain a lot of both, depending on the amount of pyroxene they contain.

主としてカンラン石より構成されるマグネシウムに富む超塩基性深成岩。一般にカンラン石のほかに輝石が伴われ，生成条件によってスピネル，ザクロ石，斜長石，角セン石，黒雲母などが副成分鉱物として含まれる。カンラン石が90％以上で，輝石の少ないものをダナイトduniteと呼び，それ以下のものについては，伴われる輝石の量比によって，斜方輝石の多いものをハルツバージャイトharzburgite，単斜輝石の多いものをウェーライトwehrlite，両方とも多いものをレルゾライトlherzoliteと呼ぶ。
