…Since the 16th century, many grammarians have tried to standardize the German language. Among them, Georg Schottel, in particular, in his series of works on German grammar in the mid-17th century, systematized and standardized German grammar to an unprecedented extent, and German language was given a solid standard for the first time. Although he recognized the superiority of the Meissen dialect, which was the basis of Luther's German language, he also took into account Southeastern German and advocated the creation of a standard German language, hochdeutsch, as an abstract language that was not limited to a specific region or dialect, and this idea was passed down to later generations. After Schottel, efforts to standardize German literature continued, but JC Gottschedt's grammar book, Foundations of German Grammar (1748), published in the mid-18th century, was accepted in various places as the standard German language that replaced Schottel's, and Southeastern Germany and Switzerland came to follow this standard. …
