A port city facing Jiaozhou Bay, south of the base of the Shandong Peninsula in eastern Shandong Province, China. It serves as both a commercial port and a military port. In 1897, Germany occupied it on the pretext of the murder of a missionary, and it later became a leased territory, and the port and city were built. During World War I, Japan occupied it and operated it for about 10 years from 1914. The port has a large depth of water, and it is connected to various parts of northern China via the Jiaozhou-Qingdao Railway (Jinan to Qingdao), and exports peanuts, coal, salt, etc. from the railway line and nearby areas. Industries include spinning, cotton weaving, matches, oil extraction, and flour milling, and it is also known as the birthplace of Tsingtao beer. In 1984, it was designated a special economic and technological development zone and became an open city to the outside world, and investment from overseas has concentrated there, leading to rapid growth as a modern port city. Investment from Korea has been particularly notable. It is home to Haier, China's largest home appliance manufacturer. It also serves as a summer resort due to its mild climate and relatively cool summers. Qingdao Liuting International Airport is connected to cities in Japan and South Korea. Ferries are also available to Shimonoseki and Incheon. 3.65 million people (2014). → Related topics Special Economic Zone | Shandong Province | Shandong Peninsula | Fusataro Takano | People's Republic of China Aoshima→Related article Turbidite | Miyazaki [City] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
