How the genes that express this altruistic behavior are passed on to offspring has been a mystery since C. Darwin, but in 1964, W.D. Hamilton revealed that if the actions of workers result in more siblings who inherit some of the same genes as workers from their parents surviving and leaving many offspring, then the worker's genes are also passed on to offspring through a bypass via close relatives.
