Quicksand - Quicksand (English spelling)

When fine sand is subjected to an upward seepage flow, it becomes like boiling liquid. It occurs when the pressure of the water flow exceeds a certain limit, which varies depending on the specific gravity and compaction of the sand. When the quicksand phenomenon occurs, the ground loses its supporting capacity and becomes unstable. Liquefaction failure in sandy ground during earthquakes is also caused by a temporary rise in groundwater pressure due to the earthquake, and occurred over a wide area during the Niigata earthquake in 1964 (Showa 39).

粒径の細かい砂が、上向きの浸透流を受けて沸き立った液体のような状態になること。水流の圧力の強さがある限度以上になったときに生ずるが、この限度は砂の比重と締まりぐあいによって異なる。クイックサンド現象がおこると、地盤は支持力を失って不安定になる。地震時に砂地盤に生ずる液状化破壊も、地震による一時的な地下水圧の上昇によるもので、1964年（昭和39）新潟地震の際などに広範囲にわたって発生した。
