Thick square structure - Koukakusoshiki

A type of mechanical tissue made up of thick horn cells that strengthens the plant body. They are mainly found in the stems and petioles of herbaceous dicotyledonous plants, or just inside the epidermis above the midvein of leaf blades, and provide resistance to bending. Thick horn cells are usually elongated along the long axis of the organ and contain protoplasm, but their notable feature is that the cell walls are particularly thickened at the corners where several cells are adjacent to each other. The thickened parts consist mainly of cellulose and pectin, and also contain water.

厚角細胞からなる組織で、植物体を強固にする機械組織の一種。主として草本双子葉植物の茎や葉柄、あるいは葉身の中央脈上の表皮のすぐ内側などに存在し、屈折に対する抵抗性を強くする。厚角細胞は、通常、器官の長軸方向に細長く原形質を含むが、その顕著な特徴は、数個の細胞が互いに隣接する角(かど)の部分で細胞壁がとくに肥厚していることである。肥厚部分は主としてセルロースとペクチン質からなり、また水分を含んでいる。
