Optical thickness

This thickness is measured as a measure of the attenuation of radiation, and is used in astrophysics to express the thickness of material layers in celestial bodies. If the absorption coefficient per unit length at the wavelength of interest λ is κ _λ and the geometric length from the surface is x , the optical thickness τ _λ corresponding to the geometric thickness d can be expressed as follows. This type of scale is convenient because radiation plays an important role in the transport of energy within and the transmission of information from celestial bodies. If we focus only on the absorption characteristics of the material, the radiation intensity attenuates to 1/e ^τλ by passing through a layer of optical thickness τ _λ .

放射の減衰を尺度として測られる厚さで，天体物理学において，天体の物質層の厚さを表現するのに用いられる。着目する波長λでの単位長当りの吸収係数をκ_λ，表面からの幾何学的長さをxと記すと，幾何学的厚さdに対応する光学的厚さτ_λは，と表される。天体中のエネルギーの輸送や天体からの情報の伝達には，放射が重要な役割を演ずるので，この種の尺度が便利である。物質の吸収特性にだけ着目すれば，光学的厚さτ_λの層を通過することによって，放射強度は1/e^τλに減衰する。
