Oonohonji

Japanese:
Oonohonji
Years of birth: Years of birth and death unknown. He played an active role as a military commander on the side of Prince Oama (later Emperor Tenmu) during the Jinshin War (672). His surname was Omi. His father was Shishiki. There is a theory that Oyasumero, the selector of the Kojiki, was Shinji's son. When the Jinshin War broke out, Shinji was the Yubokurei of Azuma County, Mino Province (Yuboku was one of the head priests of Prince Oama). Oama first issued an order to Shinji to mobilize the troops in the county. Together with Ki no Abemaro and others, he led tens of thousands of soldiers and entered Wa from Ise (Mie Prefecture), achieving military feats such as defeating the Omi army that attacked his military camp. He served both Emperor Tenmu and Emperor Jitō thereafter, and in the 12th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign (683), he toured the country and marked the establishment of borders between various provinces. The following year, he was given the surname of Ason, and in the 10th year of the reign of Empress Jitō (696), he was given the rank of Naohiroichi (Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade) for his achievements in the Jinshin War.
