...When genes from both parents recombine to produce gametes, this is called genetic recombination. This recombination can occur according to the law of independent assortment because the genes are on different homologous chromosomes (the recombination rate in this case is 50%), or crossing over, in which genes on the same chromosome recombine as described above. The frequency with which two pairs of genes from both parents recombine on the same chromosome is called the crossing over rate.
