Aigospotamoi (Aegospotami) means "Goat River." It is a river that flows along the eastern coast of the Chersonese Peninsula in Thrace. In 405 B.C., towards the end of the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan and Athenian fleets were stationed here. The Athenian forces landed to procure food and dispersed, but were suddenly attacked by the Spartan army led by Lysander, and suffered a major defeat. This determined the outcome of the Peloponnesian War, and Athens surrendered the following year. [Kenji Furukawa]
