A French poet of the late 13th century. He lived a miserable life as a jongleur, wandering in poverty and in search of a patron. He left behind works in almost every genre, from hagiographies to fabliaux and satire. His poems, rich in lyricism and fresh sensibility, are considered to be the precursors of Billon's. In addition to La Povreté Rutebeuf, which laments his own misfortune, he is known for Le Miracle de Théophile (c. 1261), the oldest miracle play about the Virgin Mary, which has a theme similar to the Faust legend in which a monk who tries to sell his soul to the devil is saved by the Virgin Mary, and Le Dit de l'herberie, a monologue.
