Mashiko ware

Japanese:
Mashiko ware

Pottery kilns and their products in Mashiko Town, Haga County, Tochigi Prefecture. Kilns are spread across Mashiko Town, including Ao, Kuramisawa, Takinoiri, Higashiyama, and Wakiya. Its origins date back relatively late, towards the end of the Edo period. One theory is that Otsuka Keizaburo, who learned the pottery techniques of Kasama ware in Ibaraki Prefecture, opened the kiln around 1853 (Kaei 6), while another theory is that Kikuchi Seizo was already producing pottery earlier, but Keizaburo is generally considered to be the founder of pottery. In 1855 (Ansei 2), Mita Shohei became county magistrate and encouraged the pottery industry, and it developed into a designated kiln for the Kurobane Domain until the Meiji period, producing miscellaneous items such as jars, mortars, and earthenware teapots for the local people. In addition to the so-called kakewake glaze pottery, which is made by pouring milky white glaze, black glaze, and green glaze, they also produced painted pottery such as blue and white porcelain, iron painting, and itchin-byou. Since the potter Shoji Hamada settled in Mashiko in 1924 (Taisho 13) and began creating folk art, the industry has flourished, and nowadays highly creative tableware, decorative plates, and vases are produced.
