Christian theologian. After graduating from the First Higher School, he graduated from the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto Imperial University in 1913. While still in high school, he was led to convert by Ebina Danjo. After graduating from Kyoto University, he enrolled in the graduate school of Tokyo Imperial University until 1918, and studied at the Tokyo Theological Seminary while continuing his studies of Luther. In the same year, he became pastor of the Japanese Christian Church in Sinuiju, Korea, and in 1920, he became pastor of the Japanese Christian Church in Kumamoto and lecturer at the Kyushu Gakuin Theology Department. In 1922, he studied in Germany. After returning to Japan, he moved to Tokyo when the Lutheran Theological Seminary (the successor to Kyushu Gakuin) moved there, and taught doctrinal history and church history. He presided over the Luther Study Group and launched the monthly journal "Luther Studies." In 1933, he received a doctorate in literature from Kyoto University for his work "Luther's Fundamental Thought Revealed in His Commentary on the Book of Romans."

キリスト教神学者。第一高等学校を経て 1913年京都帝国大学文学部卒業。高校在学中，海老名弾正に導かれて入信。京大卒業後，18年まで東京帝国大学大学院に在籍し，ルター研究を継続するかたわら東京神学社に学ぶ。同年朝鮮新義州日本基督教会牧師，20年熊本日本基督教会牧師，九州学院神学部講師に就任。 22年ドイツへ留学。帰朝後，ルーテル神学校 (九州学院の後身) の東京移転とともに東京に移住し，教理史と教会史を担当。ルター研究会を主宰し月刊『ルター研究』発刊。 33年『ロマ書講解にあらわれたルッターの根本思想』により京都大学から文学博士号を受く。
