The leaves are glabrous, diamond-ovate, broad-ovate, ovate, obovate, or oblong, and the undersides are slightly white. In May, it produces white, five-petaled flowers measuring 5-8 mm in diameter in umbel-shaped corymbs. It grows mainly in sunny, rocky areas in the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of the Kinki region, and is also found in Korea and China. S. nervosa Fr. et Sav. is similar to this species, but has soft hairs on the leaves and is distinguished from S. serrata.
