King Doso - King Funa Do

An aristocrat of the Nara period. Crown prince in the final years of the reign of Empress Koken. Son of Imperial Prince Niitabe. Brother of Prince Shioyaki. In 737 (Tenpyo 9), he was ranked as Junior Fourth Rank Lower, in 740 as Junior Fourth Rank Upper, and in May 756 (Tenpyo Shoho 8), when the retired Emperor Shomu passed away, he was appointed crown prince by his will. However, in March of the following year, he was deposed by Fujiwara no Nakamaro and others on the grounds that he had committed lewd acts in the dark and had not repented even after receiving an imperial decree. On June 28 of the same year, when the rebellion of Tachibana Naramaro was exposed, he was arrested at his residence in Ukyo and died under a cane on July 4. There is a poem about him in the Manyoshu.

奈良時代の貴族。孝謙(こうけん)天皇末年の皇太子。新田部(にいたべ)親王の子。塩焼(しおやき)王の弟。737年（天平9）従(じゅ)四位下、740年従四位上、756年（天平勝宝8）5月聖武(しょうむ)太上天皇崩御の際、遺詔により皇太子に立てられた。しかし翌年3月諒闇(りょうあん)中に淫(みだ)らなことをし、教勅を加えても改め悔いないとの理由で、藤原仲麻呂(なかまろ)らにより廃せられた。同年6月28日橘奈良麻呂(たちばなのならまろ)の反乱が暴露すると右京の宅で連座逮捕され、7月4日杖(じょう)下に死んだ。『万葉集』に一首がある。
